Teddy Bears in the Library Friday, Feb 8 2008
A friend sent me this report from a public librarian
Today’s weirdest patron (thus far, anyway) was the grown lady who came in clutching a large teddy bear. She applied for a card (w/ lots of paranoia about letting us set her library acct/internet access password for her–that’s usually the first tip-off that we’ve got someone whose brain chemicals need a bit of TLC), and then went back outside and brought in 4-6 more large stuffed animals, which she proceeded to arrange on the comfortable chairs in the periodicals reading area.
She talked to them all quite extensively, in the tone a mother would use w/ wayward children. Then she got on the internet, browsed a bit, carrying on a running dialog w/ the web pages, and then returned to her ‘family’ in the periodicals area. She repeatedly loudly admonished the bears to stop interfering in her business and to be quiet and mind their own business.
Apparently they didn’t obey sufficiently, b/c she then carried them each out out in quite a huff, chastising each one along the way, put them into her shopping cart which was outside, and left.
Sometimes I think - there, but for the grace of God, go I.
